European Youth Week

European Youth Week takes place from the 15th-21st May 2011 in all countries of the Youth In Action Programme to celebrate and promote youth activities.  In Ireland, Youth Information Centres in association with Eurodesk are hosting a series of events during the week from a variety of locations.

 

The events being provided include:

 

Youth In Action and European Voluntary Service (EVS) Info sessions: will offer young people an opportunity to find out how they could get involved; tell them about the application processes and potential opportunities available.

 

European Table Quizzes:  A chance to test your knowledge of European issues.

 

Multi-cultural Nights: will provide an opportunity to learn more about a variety of cultures that exist in Europe today. The event will be centred around an enjoyable party atmosphere with accompanying entertainment and music

 

Information sessions: will offer people the chance to get informed in aspects of youth involvement and opportunities through Eurodesk.

Youth Mental Health - DLR

Youth mental Health - DLR are holding a lunch time lecture in Sallynoggin Youth & Community Centre, Pearse St, Sallynoggin on Wednesday 11th May @ 12.30- 13.30

The talk is on The Effects of Parental Separation .  What can we do to help?

European Youth Week Photography Competition 2011

“Youth on the Move” The Eurodesk Network and Youth Information Centres would like to invite you to use your imagination and skills to capture an image on the theme “Youth On The Move” and what it means to young European citizens nowadays

 The competition is open to young people in two age categories:

13—17 years  /  18—30 years old

There will be a €75 voucher for

Dundrum Shopping Centre for each category

Lunchtime Lecture on Deliberate Self-Harm

Youth Mental Health Dun Laoghaire Rathdown was established in November 2010 specifically to look at promoting positive youth mental health in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area. A number of talks and other events are being planned and arranged by this group to run throughout the year.

Further details of events targeting Youth Mental Health for parents, professionals and young people will be posted in the coming weeks and months. If you are interested in receiving notification on these events, Ph: Dun Laoghaire VEC on 01 2147200.

Also for your information, a youth panel will be developed which will be made up of young people (15 – 18year olds), living in the region. This youth committee will be central to the shaping of the programme of events and future of this initiative. It is hoped this group will take part in training and leading events during the year. If anyone is interested at getting involved with this group (whether they have experienced personal mental health issues or not), they should contact Emma on 086-8401046.

Changes in Budget 2011 !!

  • Student Grants are reduced by 4%.  It is expected that this reduction will apply to all existing and new grant holders from January 2011
  • A new eligibility category is added to the family income limits for exemption from 50% of the new Student Contribution
  • The qualifying distance between home and college for the non-adjacent rate of grant is increased from 24km to 45km
  • Mature students will no longer be automatically eligible for the non-adjacent rate of grant

Dun Laoghaire Youth Information will have an information point on Going to College 2011 in Bloomfields Shopping Centre on Monday 17th January and Tuesday 18th January.

National LGBT Helpline

Ireland’s first National LGBT Helpline was launched on Monday 22nd November 2010.  The new LGBT Helpline is a national initiative made up of the 8 regional LGBT helplines.

Christmas Fireworks and Parade

This year the Christmas Fireworks and Parade will be held on Saturday 20th November.

The Parade departs from the Peoples Park @5.15pm.  The Fireworks display and switching on of lights @ 6pm at the Harbour Plaza.

Calling all young people to design a logo for Youth Mental Health.

What does ‘mental health’ mean to you?

Is it about emotions, self image, belonging…..?

Can you put your thoughts into an image?

We are a local interagency group in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and our task is to develop a Mental Health Strategy for the area.  We need the artistic skills & expertise of young people to help us design a logo for our promotional material.

The winner will receive €100 and have their design incorporated into a logo by our Graphic Designer.
