INTER-RAILING

Dun Laoghaire Youth Information Centre have produced a useful guide to print off: Inter-railing
Some useful tips for Inter-railing
Essentials
- A sturdy rucksack with padded shoulder straps
- Make sure you are insured: Travel & Health
- E111 form for EU medical cover
- Money: work a daily budget and try to stick to it as much as possible. Do some research to find out how much it would cost to eat & sleep in each county before you go.
- First Aid: Include Band Aids, Stomach tablets, Sun Blcok etc.
Before you go
- When packing remember that you will have to carry everything on your back. Be sensible
- Good walking boots, dark comfortable clothes (less washing), rain gear.
- Safety Issues
- Bring traveller cheques - keep separated note of the numbers/ receipt
- Keep passport. Insurance information, I.D. Inter-rail ticket with you at all times.
- Handy tip: Keep these in a money belt which can be strapped to your body underneath your clothes. Then use a 'bumbag' as a decoy for potential pick-pocketers
- Ring home regularly and give someone a general idea of your travel plans
Planning your journey
- It is useful to plan your journey but do not be afraid to change it as you go along. If you do not like a city, leave and travel to somewhere else.
- Try to travel in a circle. It saves time.
- Use your timetable to plan your journey! Do not arrive at a train station to find that there is no train leaving for Prague to go to Zurich for another 4 days
- Try to arrive early in a city in the morning. It means that it is daylight and that you have time to find accommodation and get a feel for the city before night falls
When you arrive in a city
- Go to the tourist office as soon as you can. They can book you into a hostel, give you directions, tell you the main tourist sites and give you advice.
- Go to the bank or bureau de change and get your money for that country
- Get rid of your rucksacks: either put it into lockers in the railway station or go to your hostel. It makes it less obvious that you are a tourist just arrived and it makes sightseeing a lot easier!
Train Journey
- Travelling by train by night cuts your accommodation expenses and allows you to spend your days exploring a city etc.
- Be sure you have paid any necessary train supplement or you may be fined
- Try to book a carriage if you are going on a long journey. The seats are far more comfortable.
- Bring your own food and drink on the train - it is much cheaper!
